3 tips for choosing art for your kid’s bedroom

Picking art for a kid’s bedroom is a great opportunity to be a little more playful than you might be in other spaces in your home.

However, that doesn’t necessarily make it easier than buying art for any other rooms in your house. Here are a few things you should keep in mind before buying a painting or other work of art for a child’s bedroom.

Be playful but don’t get too carried away

 

There can sometimes be a temptation to fill kids’ rooms with lots of colors, texture and all the exciting things we can find. For most people, a kid’s bedroom is a chance to go a little wild…

However, this is a recipe for migraines and a bedroom that is not relaxing (and we want the little guys to get to bed at some point!).

Don’t forget that you can still choose art that you love and that you would be happy to hang in another space in your home.

Know exactly what atmosphere you want to create

 

An important thing to consider not only with your art but the decor of the room, in general, is what atmosphere and feeling you’re trying to manifest.

Bright, vivid colors are great for stimulating the imagination. If your child does a lot of playing, drawing or other activities in their room, this is what you want to aim for.

However, if you have trouble getting your child to sleep, perhaps you want something that is more calming.

Remember, calming doesn’t have to mean boring! You can still choose an interesting or bright piece. Perhaps it uses only a couple of bright colours against a white background and therefore isn’t too busy. Or it could be a piece that uses more calming colours while depicting something eye-catching.

It’s all about how a piece of art makes you feel.

Don’t be too matchy-matchy

 

Do you have a theme? It might Disney films or superheroes. You could be very obvious and choose artwork that explicitly references and fits in with those themes.

However, as a kid grows and interests change, you may decide to change or get rid of the idea of a theme altogether.

Art is, of course, an investment so consider how an individual piece will work as the child gets older. Sure, they might love a painting in their early years but will it still be appreciated as they mature?

Choosing something that complements the color scheme or subtly references the theme of the room will mean you have more flexibility if you make changes to the room later on or if you decide to move the art to another space.
